The festival of nine nights is upon us and what better way to celebrate it than with the Gujaratis of George Town? The community has had a recorded presence in our city from almost inception and many of them have contributed immensely to its growth. A number of them still continue to live in Chennai, some in an almost exclusive enclave around the Ekamreswara Swami Temple, Mint Street. Come Navaratri and the community organises Dandiya performances in certain pockets of George Town. Beginning late at night after the traditional aarati, this colourful group dance of Gujarat is a must see. It brings that State to Tamil Nadu. Come, join historian Sriram V to learn about the history and heritage of the Madras Gujaratis and also witness the Dandiya performance.
